The Federal Municipal Council has recently achieved a significant milestone by completing its comprehensive Reconciliation Action Plan, a project that has brought together Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members in a shared journey towards unity and understanding. This remarkable initiative, spearheaded by the Community Development Team, has not only fostered stronger community ties but also earned the council the prestigious Local Government Professionals Australia Excellence Award.

Julie Shipley expressed her excitement and pride in the project, highlighting the collaborative efforts that made it possible. "This reconciliation plan is a testament to our commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful community. The involvement of Aboriginal Elders and community members has been invaluable in guiding us through this journey," she said.

The Reconciliation Action Plan featured a series of meaningful events designed to celebrate and honour Indigenous culture and heritage. Among these were special ceremonies held during citizenship events, which provided a platform for acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land and promoting cultural awareness. Additionally, Federal Municipal Council organised various activities during NAIDOC Week, a time dedicated to celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of First Nations Peoples.

Looking ahead, Federal Municipal Council is planning a community BBQ for Close the Gap Day early in the new year. This event aims to bring together residents from all walks of life to support the national effort to close the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members.

At the community meeting where the Reconciliation Action Plan was shared, General Manager Julie Shipley shared her vision for the Federal Municipal Council, stating her goal is "for all council officers to actively engage in council reconciliation initiatives and bring the Reconciliation Action Plan to life". Completing this plan represents a significant milestone for the council, showcasing their commitment to fostering a more inclusive and harmonious community.

With ongoing support and involvement from all community members, the council is set to implement lasting positive changes that will benefit future generations.
