Close the Gap Day

Closing the Gap on Health Inequality
On 20 March 2025, the Federal Municipal Council proudly hosted a Close the Gap BBQ, an event dedicated to raising awareness and promoting health equality for First Nations peoples. This event was part of the broader National Close the Gap Day initiative, which has been a significant movement in Australia for over a decade.

The BBQ brought together community members, local Elders, and advocates who are passionate about closing the health and life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members. The education speaker was Jack Key, who represented RANZCO, an organisation committed to Closing the Gap on eye health. Jack shared his insights and experiences, emphasising the importance of community involvement and government support in closing the gap. The event also featured cultural performances, which added a rich and meaningful dimension to the gathering, celebrating the heritage and resilience of our local Indigenous community.
The Federal Municipal Council's commitment to hosting such events underscores its dedication to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. By participating in National Close the Gap Day, the council not only raises awareness but also encourages actionable steps towards achieving health equality. The BBQ served as a reminder of the collective effort required to make significant and lasting changes.
As the day concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in closing the gap. The Federal Municipal Council looks forward to continuing its support for this vital cause and working alongside the community to ensure a healthier and more equitable future for everyone.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure that health equality becomes a reality for everyone.
